One of my pet peeves, one of the most overused phrases in the English language.

R.I.P.

It’s supposed to be poignant. I think it’s partly down to my atheism, that I don’t believe that people are resting anywhere at all once they’ve gone, that it bugs me so.

Rest In Peace.

It doesn’t even sound nice. It doesn’t even look nice. And when people constantly post it on Twitter, like it’s supposed to mean something when you haven’t even met the person you’re using it for, and then it gets retweeted and retweeted, it seems to lose its whole meaning and just becomes this sort of casual, customary remark.

What’s wrong with a simple “goodbye” or a personal message, like “thanks for all you gave to the world”. It’s because people don’t know what to say, or don’t want to take the time to think.

R.I.P. [insert name] - it makes me sound caring, but I’m really craving some cheese right now.
